Vintage Sticks & Real Drum vs Practice Pad
I have many pairs of drumsticks, new and old, for various playing styles. In my collection, I have Vic Firth sticks from the 1970s and 1980s. I compare those with the Vic Firth sticks made today. Comparing SD1 Generals only. Also, I have some thoughts about using the practice pad. Thanks for watching! Check out my book, "The Ancient Art of Modern Drumming."

Three Pipe Band Standards

Welcome to my snare drum rendition featuring three iconic pipe band standards from The Cedar Glen Pipes & Drums Band: Garryowen, Brown Haired Maiden, and Teribus. Join us for our upcoming performances at the Iowa Irish Fest, taking place from August 2nd to 4th, 2024, in Waterloo, Iowa. I find that practicing along to recordings of these tunes played on pipes is an excellent way to prepare. Unfo...
Authentic 1870s Rope Drum Restored & Played
Переглядів 232Місяць тому
This drum appears to be a Civil War period snare drum possibly from Klemm and Brother, Musical Instruments, Philadelphia indicating a manufacture between 1858-1879; the shell is made of plied wood and has a compass star inlay around the vent hole; ten iron hooks attached to the shell hold the rope. Some people believe a drum like this should sit in a museum as it continues to deteriorate. All I...

Kirk vs Spock
Переглядів 2504 місяці тому
I'm a fan of the original Star Trek series, especially the music by Gerald Fried. One of my favorite scores is from the episode "Amok Time," where Kirk and Spock face off in a ritual fight. I created a percussion piece called "Kirk vs Spock," inspired by the original's 5/4 time signature and menacing feel. I used various drums and cymbals, recording with a Zoom H4n and editing with Adobe Auditi...

I had the great pleassure of performing in the pit-band for a Waterloo Community Playhouse production of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." That was the only live show I have used an e-Drum kit. It was perfect for that venue because I could could keep the stage volume low and still play with intensity. A line out ran from my amp to the auditorium PA.
"Automaticity II" Dueling Snares & Bass Drum
Переглядів 1376 місяців тому
"Automaticity" is an original piece I wrote for snare drum and rudimental bass drum. I've shared a version that features a Rogers Dyna-Sonic with bass drum. Later, I recorded a Slingerland TDR to the same bass drum track. It was fun putting them all together as a "dueling snares" with bass drum. I hope you like it, the notation is seen in the last frame. Thanks for watching and subscribing. I a...
Ludwig Acrolite, 1967.
Переглядів 3587 місяців тому
I busted my 1967 Acrolite out of the case this morning. It's been a while since I've played it. It's not nearly as sensitive as my Rogers Dyna-Sonic, but it has a fun, ringy tone. It's a nice effect. I'm the only only owner this snare drum has had. My parents got it for me when I was a kid.

This piece was composed by Larry McCormick for the Waterloo Chevaliers Drum & Bugle Corps in 1968. There are 3 bass drum parts and double tenor drum parts. I'm only playing the snare part and the middle bass drum part. Using my vintage 12"X15" Rogers Dyna-Sonic snare and Rogers PowerTone 20" bass drum. The snare drum batter head is a Remo Powerstroke 3, the bass drum batter is an Evans EMAD. Ch...
Crazy Army Snare Drum Solo with Bass Drum

"Crazy Army" is a true snare drum solo because it was not written to accompany a melody played by fife or bugle. Lemely did not write a bass drum part that I am aware of, I improvised the bass drum in this video. The snare is a 1967 Rogers Dyna-Sonic (12" x 15") with the original gut strung snare frame. (Remo Powerstroke 3 batter head.) The bass drum is a 1967 Rogers PowerTone (14" x 20") missi...
"The Hep Cat" Street Beat for Snare and Bass Drum
Переглядів 3558 місяців тому
My friend Wayne made up this beat for The Drumslingers, a drum group we played with back around 2007. He played it for us one night at practice and we all instantly loved it! It's got a powerful street beat groove. I've transcribed the snare part, but I improvised the bass drum part. DRUMS: Rogers Dyna-Sonic Field Snare, 12'x14" (1967.) Rogers PowerTone Bass Drum, 14"x20" (1967.)
Gene Krupa Training Sticks

I bought these aluminum training sticks just because I thought they were cool when I was about 14 years old. They are to be used on a rubber practice pad, not on drums or cymbals. As you loosen up your grip, they begin to ring. Listen with headphones for best comparison.

    That was fun Ed. Kinda wish you had hit them all with the snares off. Were they all at the same pitch? I have those, except the Dyna. The Slingy I have, is a '75, 6 1/2 deep Krupa model like yours. Hands down the best crack of my metal snares. Great playing as usual!

      @TheDrumslinger 8 днів тому

      Good point, I should have played snares off as well. I don't try to match the pitch, I just tune the drum to where it seems best to me. Like I said in the video, I do like them tight.

    In summary, how does the metal and plating over the metal affect the overall sound? It appears low and high volume is a metric for comparison?

    • @TheDrumslinger
      @TheDrumslinger 8 днів тому

      The shell material makes a big difference in the tone/timbre. But the chrome plating is negligible. You can get a brass shell that is raw and it will sound like a chrome plated shell. Big differences are noticeable between steel, aluminum, brass, copper, and acrylic. Wood shell drums can have a finish wrap or be "natural" and the tone difference is undetectable to me.

    I've noticed that too about Ludwig metal snares--I think it has to do with the really wide snare beds

      I think you are on to something. Ludwig kept using deep snare beds, like for older calf head drums, long after the introduction of plastic heads.

    The curled pinky on the left hand call Bobby Thompson was big on that. When I play snare drum I use the Bobby Thompson grip, I was taught by some of his students. My flight schedule with the Floyd Bennett golden eagles from Brooklyn New York 1960 1961 from the New York Skyliners, Eric perilous technique. Those were the days of rudimental drummers. Today more into visuals like juggling. John dowling, may he rest in peace was a good friend of mine he taught many of the top rudimental drum lines in the nation. He is the person who developed back sticking use the first time with the Air Force, drum quartet taking first place, I believe it was 1960. John flowers, John Dowling, dick filkins, I forget the fourth drummer❤❤❤❤

    Ed, I was in the middle of a long winded comment when I lost it all with erroneous keystroke. Probably for the best. Just want to say that your presentation on this topic, in my humble opinion, is right on. I'm familiar with some of the folks you mention. I was taught out of the J. Burns Moore book, took private lessons from Earl Sturtze, and knew and jammed with some of the Sons of Liberty. I grew up on the Connecticut side of the NY/CT border. So there was a lot of drumming culture cross-pollination had. Keep up the good work! -Joe
